The following is a Lesson Plan from Diane's class. It involves ways in which our students are working to be responsible members of our community.

Title: Being a Good Citizen
Date: month of April
Grade Level: K-2
Curriculum Area: Social studies
Strand: Civics
Standard: SS:CV:4 Rights and Responsibilities
SS:CV:2:4.1 Examine the responsibilities of individuals as members of a family, school and community.
SS:CV:2:4.2 Discuss ways individuals can be involved in their community.
Objectives: Students will understand the meaning of being a citizen and what a good citizen does.
WEEK 1 - INTRODUCTION: Look at and talk about the word citizen. What does it mean? Talk about being a good citizen. Post word on Word Wall.
Core activities: Decide what we can do to help our school
- clean up our classroom
- clean up our school interior
- rake and clean up the playground
- clean up the nature trail
WEEK 2 - INTRODUCTION: Create a class picture/object book about being a good citizen.
Using:
- Dog bone and pictures of dogs and cats to feed animals
- Grocery bag and pictures of food to share food with the hungry
- A sock and pictures of clothing to donate clothes to those who need them.
- A washcloth and pictures of children cleaning
Core Activities: Daily review the class book.
- Create food drive brochures to pass out to staff and students
- Decorate a box for food drive
- Shop for food for dogs and cats
- Visit Humane Society to donate food.
WEEK 3 - VACATION WEEK
WEEK 4 - INTRODUCTION: READ BOOK "ACTS OF KINDNESS." Make a list (names and representative objects) of those we want to show kindness to.
Core activities: Daily choose the person to be honored.
- Make a large card thanking the person for all that they do.
- Count out and bag Dove chocolates to place in the card.
- Have students deliver the card.
- Friday: Collect and deliver food from Food Drive
